Things to See at Wildlife Lakes Farm Tours
- Elk cows are available to view year-round.
- Elk calves are born in late May until early July, and they are available to see from birth on as they develop.
- Elk bull calves will have antler growth beginning at approximately 12 months of age, called Spikers.
- Elk bulls are on the farm year-round but are the most exciting to see when they are growing new antlers, from March until late August.
- Multiple ages of bulls are always available to see.
- Handling facilities are available to be seen year-round.
- Trumpeter swans can be a part of the tour. Baby swans are called signets. They normally hatch around June 1st. They are visible on the lake until they learn to fly. They normally fly at 103 days from hatching.

Antler Development
Elk bulls shed their antlers, as do whitetail deer, mule deer, red deer, and probably all members of the deer family. Elk shed theirs sometimes in late February, but mostly in March. The older bulls shed their antlers earlier than the younger ones. The photos show the fantastic growth by the week. By the end of the 15th week, they are about 85% done growing. It’s the fastest growing animal tissue known to man. Some bulls will grow as much as 50 or more pounds in the time period from March through August! Antlers have been used for medicinal purposes for over 2,000 years in many Eastern countries, and are also utilized in the United States and Canada.
